This is INSANE!!! I’ve seen college dorm rooms that were smaller than this M1087’s living space!! These trucks are spectacularly robust, as they were designed and built for military use – so they make great off-roaders. But very few of them have ended up in private hands. This one, however, has – and it’s titled for road use! It also touts slide-out side panels and it boasts a LONG list of modifications that essentially turn it into an apartment on wheels, as you can sleep, shower, and cook in it! It also boasts roof-mounted solar panels, a massive television, and enough space for chairs – so you can sit back, relax, and watch your favorite shows off the grid.
1997 Stewart & Stevenson M1087 FMTV, finished in camouflage with a green interior.
This truck was built for the United States Army and reportedly purchased by the former owner in June 2018. It’s street-legal in the state of Washington, where it’s registered as a motorhome.
Originally configured as a command center with expandable side panels, this M1087 was converted into an RV with extra insulation, flooring, a 60-gallon fresh water tank, a stainless-steel shower, a Vitrifrigo DRW180 refrigerator and freezer unit, a Sony X750H 55-inch 4K Ultra HD LED television, a king-sized memory foam mattress on a lift system, a cassette toilet, roof-mounted solar panels, Guangzhou Felicity Solar Technology LiFePO4 battery packs, and a weBoost cell signal booster, among numerous other modifications. More details about the motorhome conversion are provided below.
Factory equipment includes 20-inch wheels, a central tire inflation system (CTIS), a pneumatic braking system, a locking interaxle differential, cloth upholstery, and an adjustable steering column.
Stewart & Stevenson began providing the United States Army with its air-transportable Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) trucks in 1996, and the M1087 designation denoted a van with expandable side panels. These trucks trace their roots to the 12M18 built by Austria’s Steyr, though several modifications were made for American military use. Stewart & Stevenson quoted approach and departure angles of 40 and 22 degrees, respectively, and a 21,000-pound towing capacity.
Power comes from a 6.6-liter Caterpillar 3116 straight-6 turbodiesel engine, rated at about 290 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. Also found in construction and mining trucks, among other vehicles, the engine spins the six wheels via a 7-speed Allison automatic transmission.
